Update – April 4, 2016

Hi all,

Just a quick note. As you probably know the CSU’s were set to strike in a week, but the strike has been averted! They have reached a tentative agreement, with a 10.85% raise! Wow. I’m so happy for those faculty. See here an article on this: CSU, faculty reach deal on pay raises, avert 5-day strike.

It is interesting to note that it took threat of strike at the CSU for their chancellor to come to the table and agree to the raise.

It is also interesting to note the ways in which the raise for the CSU will manifest:

Under the agreement announced Friday, faculty would receive a 5 percent increase on June 30 and a 2 percent increase on July 1. Another 3.5 percent boost would be awarded July 1, 2017. The agreement also includes, for some faculty depending on their length of service, a 2.65 percent longevity pay increase beginning in 2017. The deal also doubles the vesting period for retiree health benefits from five years to 10 years for new employees hired after July 1, 2017.

Meanwhile, we at MPCTA are set to negotiate compensation in the next several sessions, starting April 13. We can and should learn from the CSU experience.

The District has so far indicated that they believe the salary formula itself is “unimplementable,” but we have not met since the last board meeting, when I noted in my speech that it is a contract obligation. Maybe the district will begin to listen. So…let’s see what they say when we meet again.

And then there is a matter of raises ongoing. We on the negotiations team are committed to a compensation increase for MPC faculty.

As I’ve mentioned before, multiple times, we are one of the lowest paid faculty in the system. We should get a substantive raise, and our finances can certainly handle such a fair one since we are not in the dire financial situation that the district implies.

I’ll email again early this week with our next general meeting date and with other updates, too.

Hope you all are having a good weekend!

MPCTA President
